I hire based on character first, skills second.

Yeah. We are a digital marketing firm and we better have the skill sets to perform but character is even more important.

I‘ve chosen to run a company with people that possess the character that reflects the culture I want to build here. Here are some of character traits I see in my colleagues right now:

  • Compassion
  • Selflessness
  • Loyalty
  • Respectfulness
  • Humbleness
  • Responsibility
  • Perseverance

So what about skills? I’ve hired about a half dozen people with no previous marketing skills or experience. People that want to succeed will develop the skills they need. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, if success is a goal and they can fill a need you have, they’re internally motivated to increase their skill set.

Character traits are reflected in a person’s behavior and attitude.  Behaviors are learned. Attitude determines altitude.  A person with a positive attitude and modeling good behavior feeds the kind of energy and passion I want to be reflected in our work.
